River Bass Basics

Find current breaks and present smallmouth or largemouth baits safely.

Fish the calm side of current

Start behind boulders, beside islands and along eddy edges. Bass can use softer water next to a fast feeding lane. Largemouth may favor sheltered backwaters; smallmouth are often associated with rock and flow.

Fish from stable banks first. Do not wade unfamiliar releases, dams or strong current. Water level can change quickly, so check current local flow and access information.

Let the angle do the work

Cast a tube, Ned rig or small spinner upstream and let it travel toward the current break. Retrieve enough to stay connected without pulling it out of the lane immediately.

Use enough jig weight to feel occasional bottom contact, not a weight that wedges at every rock. If snags are frequent, change angle or move lighter before continuing.

Fight fish out of heavy flow

Keep steady pressure and guide fish toward softer water when you can do so without stepping into danger. A net helps land fish from high or awkward banks.

Check the line for rock abrasion and retie often. Respect closures, private banks and limits, and remove discarded line rather than leaving it where wildlife can become tangled.
