Pike & Musky: Followers, Action & Release
Tune leader effects, use controlled boat-side turns and minimize handling time.
Test the complete lure system
A leader, snap or swivel changes weight and resistance at the lure's nose. Test gliders and suspending baits with the actual leader before fishing. Verify hardware is rated for both fish and casting loads.
Inspect split rings, snaps and leader connections after every fish or hard snag. Large baits place heavy loads on tackle even before a fish strikes.
Read followers
A following fish provides clues about speed and depth. Try a controlled acceleration or a broad direction change without stopping the lure abruptly unless that presentation is deliberate.
For boat-side figure-eights, maintain a secure stance and make wide turns with the lure underwater and away from passengers. Keep enough line and rod clearance for control. Do not lean dangerously over the gunwale.
Plan a fast release
Use a roomy net as an in-water holding area, remove hooks with long tools and cut a troublesome hook rather than prolonging handling. Keep fingers out of gill tissue and mouths.
Consider skipping fishing during stressful hot-water conditions according to local guidance. Prepare camera and measuring equipment in advance, support fish horizontally and minimize time out of water.
