Crappie: Suspended Fish & Fine Control

Dial in bait height, fall rate and subtle bite detection.

Find a repeatable suspended depth

Use electronics where available, or vary float depth in measured increments. Place the lure above located fish first; dropping directly below them can miss their feeding zone.

Mark brush and contour edges but cast beyond them so the lure settles before reaching fish. Avoid disturbing the whole school with repeated boat movement directly overhead.

Adjust fall and horizontal travel

Change jighead weight to control fall rate without making the bait profile much bigger. Thin line and a straight rig help light jigs track consistently, but choose enough strength for surrounding cover.

Compare a stationary float presentation with a slow swim at the same depth. Watch the line on the fall: a premature stop or slight jump may be more informative than a hard tap.

Stay precise around cover

Use a controlled pendulum or short pitch only where hooks cannot reach people. Keep the bait above brush and plan a landing route before casting into tight cover.

Check hooks for bending and line for nicks after each snag. If the school stops responding, change angle or pause length before cycling through colors without a clear comparison.
