Bass: Patterning Cover & Structure

Build a repeatable pattern, adjust contact and turn missed bites into information.

Separate structure from cover

Structure is the shape of the bottom: points, breaks, channels and humps. Cover is what sits on it: wood, grass or docks. Start where the two intersect, then compare similar intersections instead of fishing every visible target.

Record bite depth, shade, wind exposure, bottom composition and retrieve direction. One fish is a clue; several bites sharing conditions are a pattern. Test the pattern on another part of the lake.

Control contact and fall rate

Change weight before changing the whole presentation. A lighter Texas rig stays above grass longer; a heavier one reaches a deeper edge and maintains bottom contact. Check whether your bait returns with clean hooks, mud or vegetation.

Use a moving bait to locate active fish, then revisit promising cover with a worm, jig or finesse rig. Keep the lure's running depth near the cover rather than relying on its package depth under every line and casting condition.

Make one deliberate adjustment

Short strikes can suggest a speed, profile, hook or angle problem. Check hook points and plastic alignment first, then alter one variable. Repeat casts from a different angle to test whether fish were positioned on the far side of cover.

Use moderate pressure and appropriate drag for trebles; reserve heavier tackle for dense cover and stout single hooks. Retie after abrasion. When a reliable pattern fades, recheck conditions before assuming fish have left the entire area.
